Discovering More with Magellan SmartGPS

From time to time Adventure Yum is provided with travel products and services for review purposes. The opinions expressed about the Magellan SmartGPS for travel are mine.

As much as I love a good road trip, I am very bad with directions. I absolutely can’t drive off without one.  Now, there are GPS units.. and then there are GPS’s like the new Magellan SmartGPS ($250 at Best Buy) which takes destination awareness to a new level.  What is the magic? Their new unit can actually work in conjunction with your smartphone. It’s absolutely amazing stuff. The technology is just mind blowing, get ready to discover more, find the best gas prices and even find deals for local establishments.

Magellan SmartGPS

The new Magellan GPS has built-in Wi-Fi capabilities that can be connected through your home or public service. You’ll be able to synchronize data between the GPS and your PC.  Perhaps one of the most incredible features of this nifty little GPS is that it has built-in Bluetooth, which enables you to get fuel pricing, traffic light camera information and weather when you “pair” the SmartGPS to your smartphone. Can you believe it?

Social Media meets GPS?

When traveling in unknown territory, it’s hard to know what restaurant to eat at or the skinny on where to go. But, no longer. Easily find reviews, content and real time information through the GPS for both Yelp  and  Foursquare.

Another awesome feature: It has wireless back-up camera compatibility! You can use the Magellan SmartGPS in conjunction with your back-up camera for better viewing.

Free SmartGPS Companion Apps Make it Happen

When you purchase the SmartGPS, it includes free SmartGPS companion apps for either the Android or the iOS. The app allows you to make trip plans on your cellphone and sent them to the GPS unit. It will also be what allows you to connect and have access to Yelp and Foursquare.  You’ll also be able to use pedestrian mode on your smartphone when you are on foot. Pretty sweet!

Surprisingly, I found the new SmartGPS is really easy to get up and running right out of the box. You can charge via USB or with the car charger which is incorporated into the holder. There is a tutorial video that you can watch right on the unit which I found particularly helpful and convenient. I had no trouble gearing up and putting this little clever travel gadget to good use.

When I first opened the box, I definitely never would have guessed that saving money would be a part of what this GPS has to offer. Being able to find fuel pricing and getting local deals is definitely an added perk. I am beyond impressed. With all of our summer travel plans, this bad boy will be a very welcomed side kick.

Do you need a vacation? Magellan just launched a summer sweepstakes with a grand prize of a romantic trip for two to Hawaii with airfare, 5 nights at the Ritz Carlton, rental convertible car and more. Enter to win here!

There’s so many times I can use a GPS. I have no sense of direction and often get lost. Even my kids tease me. What I’d love this for most of all is when I need to drop or pick my kids up from some of their friends home. I’m embarrassed having to ask parents for directions.

  2. Angela Kinder says:

We definitely could have used a GPS last year on Thanksgiving. We went out of town to see Nature in Lights on Fort Hood, and thanks to Google directions, we got sooooo lost! We ended up in a seedy part of town to ask for directions and they had no clue what we were talking about. We finally got back on the main road and found someone who knew where we were going. We were only a few blocks away.

I was taking the boys to a Christmas light show. It was at a campground called Mr. B’s. One of my boys has autism so there are very little events we can all do together. Sitting in a car and driving through a light display was something we could do together safely. I was thrilled I left here at 530 pm they were opened until 830 pm. It was suppose to be approximately a 30 minute drive according to an online direction service. I drove according to the map I was given. As it turns out the road I was to make a right turn on dead ended. I drove around trying to figure it out myself, waited in a gas station for someone who looked like they weren’t going to kills us so I could get directions. Finally realized I needed gas (Good thing I was at a gas station) finally I was told the road split and I needed to pick it up on the other side of the highway! Are you kidding? At 8:20 pm I arrived, the kids were barely awake and it was beautiful. They all said it was nice but it was just to far away!! LOL
